The tour guide delved into the Great Wall’s history, architecture, and cultural significance—highlighting its role in ancient defense and the distinct scenery of the Mutianyu section, celebrated for its grandeur, grace, and dramatic slopes. She also shared the well-known Chinese proverb, “He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man,” encouraging the scholars to climb it and gain an appreciation for the monumental effort that went into its construction.

Upon reaching the Mutianyu Great Wall, the scholars proceeded up the stone steps. Standing on Watchtower 8, they were struck by the majestic blend of human achievement and natural grandeur. As Prabhanka Deka from Peking University remarked, “The scenery and the view was breathtaking. The climb to the top of the wall was tiring, but worth the effort.”

Throughout interactions during the visit, scholars not only admired the historical landscape but also felt a growing sense of cultural connection. John Paul Grima from Tsinghua University noted, "Visiting Mutianyu Great Wall with colleagues from various universities, we traced Chinese history through its timeless scenery. The trip let us explore cultural inheritance, civilizational dialogue, and historical depth through our exchanges." His Tsinghua colleague Kaleem Ullah Jan Khan added that the visit allowed him to "feast his eyes on the grandeur of a thousand years," calling it "an unforgettable memory."

As a final activity, scholars printed and exchanged their photos from the Great Wall. These images served as snapshots of the inclusivity and diversity of Chinese culture, creating a vivid memento of this cross-cultural exchange.

The Beijing International Scholars Exchange Platform, initiated and organized by Tsinghua University, aims to bring together leading global scholars in Beijing, promote high-level academic exchange and cross-cultural collaboration, and strengthen Tsinghua’s international influence and cultural reach. Moving forward, Tsinghua will continue to offer diverse academic and cultural activities for international scholars, injecting new energy and momentum into Beijing’s development as a leading global hub for talent and cultural dialogue.
